Two activists from Dernière Rénovation managed to break onto the stage where the final of a Street Fighter 6 video game tournament was taking place on Sunday, November 5 at Paris Games Week. In the video posted by the environmental collective on social media, the two men can be seen passing the security cordon, climbing onto the stage and smearing orange paint on the players' screens, before being caught by security guards.
In a statement, the environmental group said that "humanity is currently fighting its last battle" for the climate, comparing it to "the last round of a game, [...] the one where everything is still possible." "We can still turn the situation to our advantage and counter the climate disaster if we act now and radically," he continues, calling on the video game community to "play a decisive role in this fight."
Orange Paint and Event Disruption
Dernière Rénovation (Last Renovation), which "asks the government for a major plan for the thermal renovation of buildings, financed to the tune of 12 billion euros annually", has chosen orange paint and the disruption of high-profile events as its mode of action. Its activists have already disrupted a stage of the Tour de France and a match of Roland-Garros. They also blocked roads and sprayed orange paint on ministry fronts.
The e-sport tournament was organized as part of Paris Games Week, the French video game trade show that was held until this Sunday at the Porte de Versailles exhibition center. The organizer of the event did not react to the interruption. The competition was able to resume after the interruption.
