Brancusi in Romania is almost a pleonasm. The great sculptor, born in the rural village of Hobita, in the Principality of Romania, on February 19, 1876, is both synonymous with Romanian roots, anchored in magnificent folk craftsmanship and a strong Orthodox spirituality, and national pride for having transcended them, through the purest abstraction, to modern art. He obtained French nationality in 1952 and died a French citizen at the age of 81 in Paris on March 16, 1957. He is soberly buried in the Montparnasse cemetery. In his will, he bequeathed to the French State his entire Parisian studio, his life's work as an artist, on Impasse Ronsin (15th arrondissement), where he photographed himself as a poet and a Vulcan.
