Things aren't going well for VfL Wolfsburg at the moment. Although they managed to pull off an upset against RB Leipzig in the DFB Cup, VfL can no longer win in the league.
Wolfsburg - VfL Wolfsburg continue to lag behind their own standards in the Bundesliga. Against Werder Bremen on Sunday, the Lower Saxony team could not get beyond a 2-2 (1-1) draw and are now winless in the league for four games. For Bremen, on the other hand, it was the first away point of the season, which allowed the Hanseatic team to move further into the secure midfield of the table.
In front of 28,917 spectators at Wolfsburg's Volkswagen Arena, Marvin Ducksch gave Werder the lead in the seventh minute. After that, Vaclav Cerny (37') and Kevin Paredes (59') turned the game in favour of the hosts. But Rafael Borré scored a deserved equaliser for Bremen (65'). Shortly before the end, Wolfsburg's Maxence Lacroix (88th) was shown a yellow card,
Werder coach Werner put his faith in the team that had beaten Union Berlin 2-0 a week earlier. "The lads have gained a small lead for the time being," Werner had said after the all-important win against the capitals. The starting eleven justified the trust and showed a very mature performance in the first half. Defensively, the visitors, who had conceded goal after goal in the early stages of the season, allowed next to nothing. Offensively, Bremen showed some pleasing combinations.
The early Werder lead was fully deserved. Ducksch sensitively curled a free-kick into the Wolfsburg goal. The hosts, with captain Maximilian Arnold again on the bench at the beginning, initially showed a sloppy performance with many misplaced passes and inaccuracies. Bremen failed to extend their lead in this phase and were punished for it eight minutes before the break.
Joakim Maehle beat Werder captain Marco Friedl at the corner of the penalty area, Cerny executed in the middle. For the Czech, who arrived from FC Twente Enschede, it was the second competitive goal for the Lower Saxony club, after he had already scored in the 1-0 win against RB Leipzig in the DFB Cup on Tuesday. Kovac had already praised Cerny before the game. "You can't expect to come here from the Netherlands and then immediately play everything into the ground. But he's a player who will definitely come."
After the change of sides, Bremen came again. But Ducksch, Jens Stage and Olivier Deman missed good chances to take the lead again. This took its revenge after just under an hour. After a fine combination over Maehle and Lovro Majer, Paredes scored completely unchallenged to make it 2-1. However, Werder were not shocked and equalised a little later through a header from Borré.
