The aim is to work out a longer-term strategy, a common "positive target vision" of the cultural landscape. The concept is intended to bring about better networking of cultural institutions as well as a greater public and appreciation for culture. The kick-off event for the cultural development plan of the city of Schongau was enormously popular: Freelance artists as well as representatives of associations gathered in the Ballenhaus. New creative ideas were named, but also problems that have been an issue for years.

Schongau – Martina Taubenberger from the "Cultural Concepts" office, which is working on the cultural development plan for Schongau, was not the only one who was surprised at how many citizens had found their way to the Ballenhaus. So were the artists and cultural workers themselves, it seemed. Again and again it was said how great it was that representatives from so many areas – whether from museums and music schools, town bands and traditional costume clubs or churches and creative industries – had come together to boost cultural life in Schongau. "I'm overwhelmed," said Deputy Mayor Daniela Puzzovio, who opened the evening. "Culture is such an important topic. It shows us our roots." Together with artists from the surrounding area, Schongau now wants to set out for a joint cultural encounter.

Positive vision of goals is to be created

What is this cultural development plan actually about? According to Taubenberger, the aim is to work out a longer-term strategy, a common "positive target vision" of the cultural landscape for the coming years. The concept is intended to bring about better networking of cultural institutions as well as a greater public and appreciation for culture. Ultimately, the study also serves as a basis for cultural policy decisions of the city.

On the one hand, she is familiar with the work in administrations and knows what levers can be moved there, says Taubenberger. On the other hand, she herself is also a musician and cultural producer. Not having money for a project is not an obstacle, as she knows from her own experience. "You first have to have the idea, develop the vision, and then go into implementation."

There was no shortage of ideas and suggestions

There was no shortage of ideas and suggestions on this opening evening, and the partition walls quickly filled up with colourful pieces of paper. Culture must be made accessible to everyone and become more inclusive, according to Marcus Graf, director of the music school. A town hall was also brought into play once again, for example on the grounds of the former Obi hardware store. "Even Denklingen has managed to do it, but we in Schongau can't do it," said one participant.

Also at the top of the list was a shared calendar of events and an advertising platform. "Time and place for youth culture" are missing in Schongau, as is the opportunity to "bring old and young together". And there is apparently also a lack of diversity: "Schongau must be more than just the Middle Ages and witches."

There will also be other topics such as "Middle Ages" and "Witches"

The proposals were discussed at length directly on site: "We are on the right track, art and culture are combined," said Esra Böse. Especially in times of crisis, culture is so important, added city council colleague Ilona Böse. And it is important for the city pastor Norbert Marxer to also bring in "the church as a carrier of culture".

Evaluation in the coming days

Taubenberger intends to carry out the evaluation in the coming days. She was pleased with the openness of everyone she spoke to. "I could feel the enthusiasm and creative will of my interlocutors, there was almost a kind of spirit of optimism in the room," she concluded. "I'm really looking forward to this collaboration," says the former Schongau native.

Incidentally, the given time frame for the cultural development plan is more than sporty. "We used the scalpel to fit appointments into the calendar," says Taubenberger. The results – the study is financially supported – must already be presented at the December meeting of the city council. Workshops are to follow in January.

Survey: Now it is up to artists and cultural workers to take part in a survey by 25 November in order to record the entire cultural life in Schongau – and the surrounding area. The survey is not only aimed at associations or freelance artists and musicians, but also specifically at commercially operating cultural enterprises. The questionnaire can be found under www.kulturentwicklungsplan-schongau.de.
