"The waste shipment regulation that the European Union Trilogue is preparing to vote on November 16 will require European companies to export ferrous scrap only to foreign companies that guarantee the same type of treatment practiced in the EU. 50% of non-European countries will not be judged adequate. And this will deprive our companies that collect ferrous materials of an outlet for their products." This was told to ANSA by the vice-president of Assofermet, the association of ferrous scrap treatment companies, Cinzia Vezzosi, at the Ecomondo fair in Rimini.
"With the new regulation, in order to send the scrap to Malaysia, I will have to show that it will be treated there as in Europe," Vezzosi explained. I will have to do a long and expensive audit on the territory and on the plant. Asking for such a commitment from our companies will be a limitation for them."
"Italy is an excellence in the recovery of ferrous scrap," Vezzosi said. We collect 13.5 million tons a year and send 13 million tons (96%) to steel mills in Italy. The remaining half a million tonnes, or 4%, is exported. And this export saves the shipyards that collect the scrap at a time like this. As a result of the economic crisis, Italian steel mills are reducing production, and therefore retirement. The market is showing signs of slowing down. There's less demand, and prices are falling."
