BRUSSELS - "Edi Rama has put himself in the same situation as Robert Fico, so he can't be among the Socialists": this is what parliamentary sources of the Socialist group in the European Parliament commented to ANSA. "Signing a memorandum with Meloni is like making an alliance with the far right, something that the European socialist family cannot tolerate," the S&D Group stressed, stressing that if this agreement applies, those who signed itwill not be able to remain among the Socialists.

On X, a platform formerly known as Twitter, the response of the Albanian prime minister arrived. "In full respect of the Italian Democratic Party, I would like to repeat my only point of view: trying to help Italy in this situation, where no one in Europe seems to have a solution that everyone can share, is perhaps not the best, but it is certainly the least that Albania must and can do!" he wrote. "If this is not left-wing in Italy, never mind, it seems that it is not even right-wing in Albania, maybe it is simply right," Edi Rama stressed.

He was echoed by the head of the Fratelli d'Italia delegation to the European Parliament, Carlo Fidanza. "Edi Rama is a pragmatic socialist and a friend of Italy," he said, commenting on the news that the Democratic Party had called for the expulsion of the Albanian leader from the Party of European Socialists after the signing of an agreement with the Italian government that envisages greater collaboration on the management of migration flows with the construction of two refugee centers in Albania. "How can you argue that Albania should join the EU led by Rama, as the EU Socialists do, but at the same time ask to throw Rama out of the socialist family? Let them make peace with their brains," Fidanza said.

European Commission sources said the draft Memorandum of Understanding with Albania "has been sent" to Brussels. The European executive is waiting to receive any version of the text signed by both parties.
