Three cats abandoned on the highway have now also survived the cat cold. Now the fun-loving trio is looking for a new home.

Rottach-Egern – Five young cats were abandoned by an unknown person at a motorway exit in the district in August, before they were picked up by a family passing through and handed over to the Rottach-Egern animal shelter. "It looked very bad for them," recalls Johanna Ecker-Schotte, chairwoman of the sponsoring association. The animal rights activist was right in her assessment. Two of the five siblings died in the first hour. The remaining trio fought their way through to this day – despite a cat cold. At the age of about four months, Jojo, Ronny and Rina are now looking for a new home.

The find, says Ecker-Schotte, was "quite mysterious". The family that had given up the animals had been passing through in the direction of Aachen, but had only spoken broken German. It therefore remained unclear at which exit of the A8 exactly the animals were found – and under what circumstances. "But I don't think the cats belonged to the family themselves," says the chairwoman of the association. Otherwise, those passing through would hardly have made the journey to Rottach-Egern.

But that journey was worth it for at least three of the five kittens. "They were brave and we did everything we could to nurse them back to health," says shelter manager Sophia Janßen. But even for her, cat cold, an infection of the respiratory tract and mucous membranes, was not without consequences. "Little Rina is blind, and unfortunately one of Brother Ronny's eyes was also destroyed," says Janßen. The two animals are therefore only placed together. "For Jojo, a separate placement with conspecifics would be conceivable." Of course, it would be even nicer if someone wanted to take all three cats, says Ecker-Schotte. "But that's often also a question of cost."

Blind cats: "Very cheerful despite the handicap"

However, the blind animals would do very well. "They almost came into their lives with their disability." Ideally, they should come to a home with a secured garden or balcony. "But they also orient themselves with their instincts," assures Ecker-Schotte. For example, cats would also stay in front of a mouse hole for hours without seeing anything in it, explains the chairwoman of the Tegernsee Valley Animal Welfare Association. "And despite the handicap, our trio is very cheerful," adds Janßen.

The two animal rights activists can only speculate about who abandoned the animals. "Unfortunately, this happens from time to time," says Ecker-Schotte. She can only appeal to have both cats and tomcats neutered in order to limit their reproduction. In case of doubt, the animal welfare association would also offer support for this. Nap
