There are countries that travelers are better off avoiding due to lack of safety. The Global Peace Index (GPI) provides information on which are the safest countries to travel to this year.

/ 10The country in the far north is the safest destination in the world. As in previous years, Iceland once again took first place in the ranking of the most peaceful countries. 2 / 10Denmark ranks second in the Global Peace Index (GPI) this year. Although the country's overall result has deteriorated compared to last year, Germany's neighbour is one of the world's safest holiday destinations. Travellers will find peace and quiet not only in the beautiful nature, but also in the relaxed metropolis of Copenhagen. © stock&people/Imago

/ 10Last year, Ireland made it to second place in the Global Peace Index (GPI). Nevertheless, the country is still one of the safest travel destinations in the world. The vast landscapes of the Emerald Isle and mighty cliffs make Ireland a popular holiday destination for hikers. But with cosy pubs and a good dose of culture, Ireland has something for everyone. © Nevio/Imago

/ 10Far away New Zealand is particularly popular with backpackers and adventure seekers. This is mainly due to the low crime rate. However, New Zealand also performs very well in the other evaluation criteria of the Global Peace Index (GPI). © Ralf Broskvar/Imago

/ 10Germany's neighbouring country ranks 5th in an international comparison of the safest holiday destinations. Although Austria was rated as somewhat less safe this year than in previous years, the country is considered to be enormously safe. Points were only deducted for the few security personnel. © Cavan Images/Imagi

/ 10Singapore also scores particularly well in almost all categories. Only the current rearmament policy and the increased import of weapons ensure that the country ranks 6th among the safest holiday destinations. For a relaxing holiday, the country is therefore still recommended for tourists. © stock&people/Imago

/ 10The popular holiday destination in southern Europe is one of the most peaceful destinations in the world. Portugal stands out with a low crime rate and a low terrorist threat. The country's beaches are a perfect family destination. If you are passionate about culture, you are also in good hands in Porto and Lisbon. © Martin Rügner/Imago

/ 10Slovenia ranks 8th among the most peaceful travel destinations this year – even though the country didn't even make it into the top ten in 2020. For holidaymakers, on the other hand, it has a lot to offer: Slovenia, with its varied landscape and cultural diversity, has gained enormous popularity in recent years. © Peter Schickert/Imago

/ 10Like last year, Japan ranks 9th among the safest countries to travel to in this year's ranking. The main reason for this is the low crime rate. There is hardly any other country where so few thefts or murders are committed as in the Asian country. Only the difficult relationship with neighboring South Korea costs Japan a few points in comparison. © Cavan Images/Imago

/ 10In an international comparison, the country of mountains ranks 10th. This is not because Switzerland is unsafe for holidaymakers. In fact, Switzerland exports significantly more weapons than many other countries. However, with its lakes, mountains and diverse hikes, Switzerland offers a particularly safe nature experience. © MetalStein/Imago

For many people, the safety of the destination plays an important role in the question of where to go on vacation. After all, when you go on holiday, you want to calm down and relax. Security and peace in the holiday destination are therefore important aspects when choosing a holiday destination. But what about the safety of many travel destinations? In the annual Global Peace Index (GPI), experts from the Institute for Economics and Peace (IEP) provide information on which countries travelers do not have to worry about their safety. Factors such as internal and external conflicts, crime rates, terrorist activities, violent demonstrations, relations with neighbouring countries and the militarisation of a country were examined.
