Emmanuel Macron is presiding over the ceremony of the 105th anniversary of the armistice of November 11 on Saturday morning. Wreath-laying, singing of the Marseillaise, handshakes... The Head of State pays tribute to the soldiers who died for France during the First World War.
This ceremony has a special resonance this year as it commemorates the centenary of the first lighting of the Flame of the Unknown Soldier in 1923. For the occasion, Emmanuel Macron gave a speech. "In the worst hours of the Second World War, on the very day of the Nazi invasion, the enemies of the time who paraded under the Arch did not dare to prevent the relighting of the Flame, bowing to something greater than their hostility: the strength of a people's sacrifice for its ideals," he said, adding that "the nation does not forget."
Emmanuel Macron also paid tribute, in the presence of their families, to the three French soldiers who died for France in Iraq in August.
