Months of preparations culminate in ceremonial meetings, street carnival and television carnival - until Ash Wednesday, Bavaria is in a state of emergency.

Munich – For the Bavarian carnivalists, the phase of exuberant informality began on November 11 at 11:11 a.m. At the start of the session, numerous carnival revellers gathered in cities such as Würzburg, Nuremberg and Munich to welcome the new princely couples. At the Viktualienmarkt in Munich, the organizers estimated the number of participants at about 11. Over the next three months, there will be a cheerful "Helau" at gala sessions, street carnival and television carnival.

Months of practice, complex choreographies – carnival parades in Bavaria

The dancers have practiced intensively for months and the guards have perfected their complex choreographies. Marching bands will delight spectators at the traditional Carnival parades in February, before it's all over again on Ash Wednesday, February 14, 2024. Before that, the cult show "Fastnacht in Franken" of the Bayerischer Rundfunk on February 2 will be turbulent again.

If you are looking for a particularly eye-catching costume for this year's parades and gala sessions, you had the opportunity to browse through the Mainfranken Theater Würzburg on Saturday. There, the costumes of past productions were offered for sale.

"Celebrate peacefully": Police in Bavaria relaxed

The police did not plan to be present in the carnival communities on Saturday with additional forces in order to steer the exuberant mood into orderly channels. "The administrative district of Lower Franconia is not comparable to the Rhineland in terms of party-loving carnivalists," according to the Lower Franconia police headquarters.

"Celebrate peacefully, show respect to other people, and avoid excessive alcohol consumption," was heard in many places. Admonitions such as those in Cologne not to urinate in doorways and to behave appropriately are considered superfluous by the police in Bavaria.
