The district association of the Europa-Union has been in existence for 70 years this year. The chairman of the Pan-European Union, Bernd Posselt, personally congratulated him on his birthday.

Wolfratshausen – The district association of the Europa-Union was founded on 26 September 1953. Since then, the members have been consistently committed to a strong community of states. On the occasion of the 70th birthday of the district association, Mayor Klaus Heilinglechner, other local politicians and the President of the Pan-European Union, Bernd Posselt, congratulated in the Wolfratshauser Wirtshaus Flößerei. In his speech, the 67-year-old called for the creation of a European army to secure peace, which is threatened in many places.

Posselt is worried: "We are at the beginning of a completely new world order"

Prior to Posselt's presentation, district chairman Alexander Lippert spoke about the successes and setbacks of European policy in fast forward. Starting with the ECSC and the anti-monopoly legislation, he first spanned the arc to the Maastricht Treaty of 1992, which sealed the foundation of the European Union. However, the spirit of optimism at that time is now hardly noticeable, Lippert summed up. Brexit, the climate crisis and the outbreak of war would jeopardise the objectives. "We Europeans have achieved a lot, but there is still a lot to do," Lippert noted.

Subsequently, his predecessor Hans-Jürgen Göbel looked back on the educational trips and events of the district association in a lecture rich in pictures. The 83-year-old has been a member since 1979 and led the district association from 1987 to 2016. For his services, Göbel received the Citizen's Medal of the City of Wolfratshausen in 2022.

CSU politician is, among other things, federal chairman of the Sudeten German Landsmannschaft

The CSU politician Posselt, president of the Pan-European Union and federal chairman of the Sudeten German Landsmannschaft, was a member of the European Parliament from 1994 to 2014. He is the author of numerous books and gives lectures at various educational institutions. "Today, there are students in almost every class whose families have been displaced from their home countries," Posselt said. Nationalism, which must be fought, is mainly to blame for this development. "Unfortunately, war has become the norm in many countries today." This makes the fight for peace all the more important, which, in Posselt's estimation, could be secured with the establishment of a European army.

The 67-year-old denounced the fact that the German government, in contrast to other countries such as France, is still resisting this: "The United States of Europe does not currently exist." Posselt also called for the abolition of the unanimity principle in force in the EU Parliament, because the vetoes of a few member states can currently prevent important measures and agreement processes.

Ex-MEP is concerned about next summer's European elections

The former MEP was concerned about the European elections on 9 June and the US presidential elections on 5 November 2024. A strengthening of nationalist tendencies is to be expected. "We are at the beginning of a completely new world order," Posselt predicted.
