Thousands of knitted and crochet blankets covered Piazza Santa Croce in Florence this morning to say no to violence against women: the 'VivaVittoria' initiative was born from the will of Ailo (TheAmerican-International League of Florence Odv) with the volunteer association Viva Vittoria Odv of Brescia, creator and promoter of the project born in 2015 and landed in about thirty squares in Italy and abroad.
The blankets are sewn with 50x50cm squares, arrived from all over Italy and also from abroad. Hundreds of people, women and men, aged between 6 and 102 years, participated in their realization; but also schools, senior centers, mercies, sports associations, religious communities and many individuals.
"An installation that goes straight to the heart and highlights the strength and resilience of women," underlined the councilor for the culture of memory and legality of the Municipality of Florence, Maria Federica Giuliani. For the municipal councillor for welfare Sara Funaro, "the thousand colours of the blankets are the thousand differences of our citizens, which must be valued to the maximum. Sewing together, on the other hand, is the metaphor of being together, within a community. Together, we can achieve much more important results."
