A large contingent of rescue workers – two-legged and four-legged – now gathered in Bad Tölz. The Police Headquarters Upper Bavaria South had invited to the action day of the rescue dog squads.

Bad Tölz – Several police dog handlers as well as about 100 volunteer rescue dog handlers with 65 dogs from the districts of Bad Tölz-Wolfratshausen, Garmisch-Partenkirchen, Weilheim-Schongau, Miesbach, Rosenheim and Mühldorf am Inn had the opportunity to get to know each other better and practice working together. Cooperation and the exchange of experience are particularly important because different organisations often come together during ad hoc operations, explains Stefan Sonntag, spokesman for the police headquarters in Rosenheim. For example, representatives of various BRK district associations, the Johanniter Unfallhilfe, the Arbeiter Samariter Bund and the DLRG as well as two privately organized rescue dog squads of the Federal Association of Rescue Dogs (BRH) were present at the event in Bad Tölz.

Dogs learn to follow trails

The police presented the work of the police in missing persons cases, to which the rescue dog teams are alerted. As Sonntag reports, the "Working Group Rescue Dog Squadrons Police Headquarters Upper Bavaria South" was founded this year. All 17 rescue dog squadrons from southern Upper Bavaria are represented. After the theoretical part, which took place in the classroom of the Tölz fire brigade on Lenggrieser Straße, the practical exercise took place on the neighbouring industrial site, where Moralt was once located. Under the guidance of experienced police dog handlers who are specially trained in the field of searching for people, the dogs followed various "trails", i.e. tracks, laid out in advance.

More events planned for 2024

"Not only the Mantrailer dogs were able to prove themselves, but also the rescue dogs, who were specially trained for area searching, were able to show their skills," reports Stefan Sonntag. Several "missing" people could be found thanks to the coordinated cooperation between rescue dog teams and the police service dog handlers of the Central Emergency Service (ZED) Weilheim.

According to the press spokesman, the Upper Bavaria South Police Headquarters has a total of 150 trained search and rescue dogs from the volunteer rescue dog squads available for missing person searches. In order to continue to cultivate the rescue dog squad working group and the important exchange between the participating organisations and the police, further events are already being planned for 2024.
