Not quite the same, nor quite another: Volkswagen's electric compact sedan returns in a modernized version almost three years after its appearance. A necessary makeover to silence the critics concerning a style that is not very statutory and a quality of interior materials that is in the background. On the outside, without changing its MPV-style architecture, the revised ID.3 wins the favour with a new front bumper, a hollowed-out bonnet, the removal of the black strip at the base of the windscreen and the two-piece rear light clusters.

The interior evolves more markedly: redesigned door panels, plush microfibre-based upholstery imitating smooth velvet and using 71% recycled materials, and a 12-inch multimedia screen. The graphics and menu navigation have been redesigned for the benefit of ergonomics, but you still have to scroll through the pages to find the desired function. On the other hand, the route planner of the ID.3 is enhanced with the detection of busy stations. It can also receive the Plug & Charge system for recognising the car by the charging station to trigger cardless charging.

In its Pro S version (4 seats only), VW's compact sedan returns to the large 77 kWh battery that accepts up to 170 kW in fast charging and allows a very realistic range of 557 km. Over a varied route of 150 km, consumption fluctuated between 16.3 kWh and 18.2 kWh/100 km. However, its versatility of use comes at a high price. While the driving pleasure is very real with energetic acceleration and acceleration, a B mode - a virtual engine brake that avoids braking - and appreciable driving comfort, the steering and brake pedal do not offer the expected feedback.
