Iran's Supreme Leader Ali Khamenei told Hamas leader Ismail Haniyeh that the Islamic Republic would not intervene in the war because Hamas had not informed Iran in advance of the October 7 massacre. This was reported by Reuters, in a publication referring to a meeting held in Tehran in early November between the two.
The report relied on three sources. However, it is important to note that Iran's proxies – i.e., Hezbollah and the Houthis in Yemen – did act against Israel during the war.
In addition, there is no reference to the training Hamas terrorists received from Iran. Israel and the United States also determined that Iran had no direct connection to the massacre itself, but Iranian support was given both economically and in terms of training.
A report published on CNN in one of the pickup trucks used by Hamas terrorists on October 7 found a document asking the commander of the force to attend a university in Tehran, in which he expressed a desire for his men to receive training in subjects such as engineering and physics.
Regarding the Khamenei-Haniyeh meeting, according to a Hamas source who spoke to Reuters, the Supreme Leader urged Haniyeh to silence the voices in the organization calling on Iran and Hezbollah to enter the war with Israel "with all their might."
The report also indicates that Hezbollah was also surprised by the massacre. "We woke up to war," said one Hezbollah commander who spoke to the news agency.
