The UN Security Council on Wednesday evening approved a resolution calling for the immediate extension of humanitarian pauses for the release of abductees and the entry of aid into Gaza. The U.S. did not use its veto.
However, it is important to note that as far as the United States is concerned, this is not a substantive decision, and in any case it has also called for humanitarian pauses.

The vote comes on advanced talks for a hostage deal, under which humanitarian pauses in support of the release of the hostages will come into effect.
Israel's ambassador to the UN, Gilad Erdan, responded to the Security Council resolution: "The council's resolution is detached from reality and will have no meaning in practice – Israel is acting in accordance with international law anyway, while Hamas terrorists will not read the resolution at all and will not act according to it. It is unfortunate that the Council continues to ignore, not condemn or even mention the massacre carried out by Hamas on October 7, which led to the war in Gaza. It's shameful!
"Hamas' strategy is to deliberately deteriorate the humanitarian situation in Gaza and increase the number of Palestinian casualties in order to activate the UN and the Security Council in an attempt to contain Israel. That won't happen. Israel will continue to act until Hamas is destroyed and the abductees returned."

The Foreign Ministry said: "Israel calls on the Security Council and the international community to insist on the release of all Israeli abductees as quickly as the resolution stipulates. Israel expects the Security Council to unequivocally condemn Hamas and address the need to create a different security reality in Gaza. There is no room for prolonged humanitarian pauses as long as 239 abductees are in the hands of Hamas terrorists."
