Clashes between settlers and Palestinians in Huwwara/Walla!
US President Joe Biden announced on Saturday that he is ready to impose sanctions banning extremist settlers involved in Palestinian attacks in the West Bank. This is the first time ever that a US administration has announced its intention to impose personal sanctions on settlers. The US move follows a large number of warnings that the US administration has conveyed to Israel in recent months, and even more so since the beginning of the war in Gaza regarding settler violence against Palestinians.
In an article for The Washington Post, Biden claimed to have stressed to Israeli leaders that attacks by extremist settlers on Palestinians must stop, and that perpetrators should be prosecuted. The president also hinted in the article that due to the fact that Israel is not taking sufficient steps, the United States must take steps of its own.

A few weeks ago, during the fighting, President Biden's national security adviser, Jake Sullivan, said in interviews with American networks that "extremist settler violence is unacceptable" and that the administration expects settlers who attack Palestinians to be prosecuted. He added that Israel had to do everything possible to distinguish between Hamas and innocent people in Gaza.

It was the second time in as many days that the US administration had publicly protested settler violence against Palestinians in the West Bank, and after US officials said Biden warned Prime Minister Netanyahu that rising tensions in the West Bank could lead to an escalation that would make the crisis surrounding the Gaza war much more serious.
