The Ombudsmen of the whole country, grouped in the Association of Ombudsmen of the Argentine Republic (ADPRA), demanded the appointment of the Ombudsman of the Nation, a position that has been vacant for 14 years, when Eduardo Mondino left his post during the government of Cristina Kirchner.
In the text, they called for "strengthening the democratic system as a whole and consolidating the progress made in terms of rights." At the same time, they urge the National Congress to fill the position.
"The resolution of this situation is necessary for the comprehensive protection of people's rights, the strengthening of control bodies and the promotion of human rights," says the body chaired by the Buenos Aires Ombudsman, María Rosa Muiños.
And they concluded: "40 years after the return of democracy, the Ombudsmen and Ombudsmen from all over the country express our commitment to the defense of the rights and consensus reached collectively, and we invite the community to accompany the defense of democracy with the vote."
The Office of the Ombudsman of the Nation, created as a result of the constitutional reform of 1994, was occupied between that year and 1999 by the Justicialist Jorge Maiorano. He was later replaced by Mondino, from the same political party, who remained for a decade from the presidency of Fernando de la Rua until the middle of Cristina Kirchner's first government.
From then on, no one was appointed again, both during the Kirchnerist periods and under the mandate of Mauricio Macri.
