Disaster with destructive power: Dangerous floods in pictures

2023-11-18T18:28:06.295Z

Highlights: Around 150,000 hectares of land were flooded, of which 57,888 were in Lower Bavaria, 51,286 in Upper Bavaria and 38,535 in the Upper Palatinate. With its heavy rainfall, low pressure "Quartos" collided with the snowmelt that had already begun and the rivers could no longer cope with the converging water volumes. The August flood in the catchment areas of the Iller, Lech, Loisach and Isar even exceeded the Whitsun flood in 1999. The outflows reached up to over 500-year events.

Melting snow, huge amounts of rain and rising river levels: floods not only cause great damage in Bavaria. They also claim human lives.

1 / 27July 1954: Several fire brigades stand on the banks of the Danube during the flood of the century in the three-river city of Passau in Bavaria. According to the Deggendorf Water Management Office, the Danube (Maxbrücke gauge, today Schanzlbrücke) rose to 4.7 metres due to prolonged rain from 12 to 20 July. As a result, around 150,000 hectares of land were flooded, of which 57,888 were in Lower Bavaria, 51,286 in Upper Bavaria and 38,535 in the Upper Palatinate. (Archive) © dpa

During the night, up to 173 litres of rain per square metre had fallen and had led to catastrophic situations in Upper Bavaria and the Allgäu. © Stephan Jansen/dpa

3 / 2723.05.1999 The archive picture shows cars washed away by the Whitsun flood in a residential street in Augsburg. Heavy rains continued in the Northern Alps from 20 to 22 May. Already in the first half of May there was heavy rainfall and the water from the snowmelt collected, which had already saturated the soil. In western Upper Bavaria, new record monthly precipitation values were measured. © Jan Nienheysen/dpa

4 / 2722.05.1999: During the Whitsun flood, a huge "lake landscape" stretches along the completely flooded Bundesstraße 2 south of Murnau in the direction of Garmisch-Partenkirchen in Bavaria. Due to the melting snow, the water levels of the rivers were already high when the heavy rain began. Even small streams overflowed, as the Bavarian State Office for Water Management explains, among other things, the critical situation at the time. © Stephan Jansen/dpa

5 / 2722.05.1999: Swept away by the floods of the Whitsun flood, a vehicle hangs as flotsam in a fence in Eschenlohe near Garmisch-Partenkirchen in Bavaria. In large areas of southern Bavaria, floods and even dam failures occurred, causing great damage and endangering people. With its heavy rainfall, low pressure "Quartos" collided with the snowmelt that had already begun and the rivers could no longer cope with the converging water volumes. © Stephan Jansen/dpa

7 / 2723.08.2005: A truck is parked on a flooded road near the Upper Bavarian village of Eschenlohe. In the flooded areas in southern Bavaria, the situation worsened further on Tuesday morning. A disaster alert was sounded in the Garmisch area after persistent rainfall. According to the Bavarian State Office for the Environment, as a result of the extreme precipitation of over 200 litres per square metre in some places, the August flood in the catchment areas of the Iller, Lech, Loisach and Isar even exceeded the Whitsun flood in 1999. The river basins of the Iller, Lech, Mindel, Zusam, Schmutter, Isar, Loisach, Mangfall and Inn rivers were affected. With more than 200 litres per square metre, this flood of the Iller, Lech, Loisach and Isar even exceeded the Whitsun flood of 1999. The runoff reached up to over 500-year events, according to the Bavarian State Office for the Environment. © Wolfilser/Imago

In Swabia and Upper Bavaria, the water volumes reached over 300 mm. © Thomas Einberger/Imago

23 / 2701.06.2016: A helicopter rescues people from a completely flooded region in Simbach am Inn, Bavaria. The floods have even claimed lives in the Lower Bavarian district of Rottal-Inn. The low pressure system "Friedericke" over the Czech Republic, as the Bavarian State Office for the Environment explains in its follow-up report on the events at that time, brought warm and humid air masses to southeastern Bavaria. Shower and thunderstorm cells formed. The continuous precipitation was 111 mm in 6 hours. The never-ending rainy weather increased the amount of rain even more and caused this flood disaster in this "actual" summer month. © Wolfram Zummach/dpa
