Two days after the citizens' meeting, the youth citizens' assembly started in the Haindlkeller in Miesbach. And when it came to participants, she didn't have to hide behind the gathering of adults.
Miesbach – Around 60 young people between the ages of twelve and 25 took part to have fun together with free pizza and a subsequent live performance by the cover band Everlasting Entropy with frontwoman Luce Hirsch and to talk seriously about topics that move the young generation in the district town. Pretty much every age and type of school in the target group was represented.
The focus was on two topics in particular: the planned skate park in Haidmühl and the Youth Parliament, which is to be elected in January 2024. The 500,000 euro skate project, which is to be built under the bridge of the B 472 in cooperation with Hausham, was presented, and the participants signaled their willingness to cooperate.
Good interest in candidacy
The Youth Parliament was also very popular. According to Mittermaier, 20 application forms have been handed out – eleven seats in the new body have to be filled. For family consultant Friese, this is a good rate: "This could lead to a real election on 20 January." If there are no more candidates than seats, the Youth Parliament will be filled without an election. As it is, however, there will be a polling station, postal voting, election board, election workers and even a panel discussion.
Getting to know democratic principles
In addition to the opportunity for Miesbach's youth to discuss their own concerns and get them off the ground, it is also about bringing democratic processes and principles closer to the younger generation – "not as dry theory", as Mittermaier says, but as lived co-determination. The willingness of the young people to follow this path is great, Friese and Mittermaier confirm in unison.
In order to gain access to the young people with these topics, a different approach was chosen, as Friese reports. Instead of a frontal lecture, the five contact persons focused on dialogue in small groups. A tight agenda was also dispensed with. To this end, the focus was on the topic request of the young target group: topics were immediately deepened on demand.
A model for the Citizens' Assembly?
It's a concept that has worked here and that makes Friese think. "Maybe we should also hand out free pizza at the citizens' meeting. Maybe then more people will take part again." After all, a very informal, pleasant exchange was possible in this way.

Parents must agree
How many candidates will ultimately run in the election to the Youth Parliament will also be decided by the parents. You must consent in the case of minors. There is time until December 15 to declare your candidacy to the city's public order office. Young people between the ages of twelve and 25 are eligible. A term of office lasts two years, and the succession principle is intended to close gaps in the event of early retirement.
Friese and Mittermaier are satisfied with the response. According to the youth officer, preparation and research into how something like this can best work took a lot of time and energy.
