Hanukkah is approaching, and although this is not how we hoped to celebrate it this year, the donuts provide us with a moment of sweet comfort, and return in a variety of fillings and coatings: patriotism in blue and white, childhood flavors and simple ones with jam.
The Israel Hayom editorial board tasted the variety, and came back with criticism and extra pounds - these are the donuts that await you on the shelves in stores and pastry shops.

Shani Bakery, Royal Pistachio Doughnut - with pistachio cream filling, pistachio chocolate ganache coating and chocolate tilon
The donut has a special and inviting look. The dough is soft, sweet and airy. The pistachio cream filling is slippery and sweet, although it does not have a distinct "pistachio" taste. The amount of chocolate frosting is just the right amount, and the flavors combine superbly. In the opinion of the tasters, another filling could be added for a perfect experience, and the highlight was the addition of the cup with whipped cream on top of the donut.

Boutique Central, Maritozzo Donuts - filled with vanilla and salted caramel
The dough is airy, reminiscent of a buttery brioche more than a donut. The filling is excellent, both the vanilla and caramel are salted. Vanilla has a rich whipped creamy taste, but it manages to be so without being overloaded sweetly and without being too heavy. Some thought it was even possible to add a little more than the successful filling.

Biscotti, Mocha Pecan Fudge Doughnut - with mild mocha cream, crispy white chocolate frosting, Chinese pecan chips and pecan coffee fudge
A different and special flavored donut. Its filling is rich, but manages to be balanced and the sweetness does not take over. The donut has a distinct taste of coffee, and the dough is juicy and rich. Because the coffee taste is so pronounced - the pecan is slightly less noticeable, as is the white chocolate.

Israela, Ne'eman pastry, photo: Gil Aviram
Ne'eman pastry, "Israela Doughnut" - filled with patisserie cream, covered with white chocolate, decorated with candies in the colors of the flag and the Israeli flag
The donut dough is extremely tasty, neither greasy nor too fried. The cream patisserie filling is fun and indulgent, gentle and vanilla, and there is a good balance between the filling and the dough. The donuts we received were coated in lots of candy, which added crunch to the texture. Some tasters especially liked the crunchies, and some felt it should have been reduced a bit.

Doughnut with jam, bonjour, photo: Osem Studio
Bonjour, a traditional jam donut
The classic donut, like the one we used to eat when we were kids, and like the one you imagine when you think of a donut. The jam is excellent, and the donut is loaded with jam, but some have said it's loaded with jam and powdered sugar more than necessary. The dough itself is not sweet, so a good balance is created, and it is very fried and crispy - for amateurs.

Raspberry Doughnut, Roladin, Photo: Tzachi Kionstein
Roladin, Sweet Rose Doughnut - filled with rose mascarpone cream, cassis marmalade, red fruit whipped cream, raspberry glasage and yogurt crispy
A donut for those who love big. Busy, luxurious and very sweet. Every bite is a feast in the mouth, the raspberry flavor dominates and the dough is crispy. It's more of a royal dessert than a donut. It combines different textures, sour and sweet, but of course - those who like a lot of sweetness will connect with it more.

Chocolate Donuts, Bread Bakery,
Breads, chocolate doughnut and hazelnuts
The donut tastes just like the donuts of yesteryear - doughy and very tasty, not pretending to be something it's not. Simple - with a twist: chocolatey filling instead of jam, which is not excessive. Some claimed that the donut tasted like a bun with Nutella.

Gluten Free Donuts, Biga chain, Photo: Sarit Gas
Biga, a gluten-free patriotic donut - filled with vanilla patisserie cream
The patisserie filling is rich and tasty, but in the opinion of some tasters the donut contained a little too much of it. The dough is a good substitute for those who do not consume gluten. There is no significant difference between it and regular donut dough, and tasters did not notice that it was a gluten-free doughnut.

Banana chocolate doughnut, Showroom Bakehouse, photo: Tamuz Rahman
Showroom Bakehouse, Chocolate Banana Doughnut
The doughnut collection includes childhood flavors, including the simple, familiar and beloved chocolate-banana flavor. The kids celebrated and said it was the perfect donut for them. The filling is very generous, the chocolate chips add to the flavor and the combination is great. The dough incorporates sugar on top, so the donut will be especially suitable for lovers of the very sweet (who are, of course, mainly the children).

Ferrero doughnut, Mickey Shmo, photo: Daniel Lila
Ferrero Rocher Doughnut - filled with praliné cream, covered with dark chocolate and chocolate pearls
The topping is very tasty and the filling is excellent. The donut isn't too heavy, and it's the perfect bite. For some tasters, the donut was too sweet, and for others - just the right sweetness, with an amount of dark chocolate that slightly eliminates the sweetness and is very noticeable in the flavor combinations.
