It was, without a doubt, one of the most exciting days since the beginning of the war. After a month and a half of tragic news that landed one after another, of overwhelming uncertainty and shock, we finally got a moment of relief. An entire country clung to media screens to see 13 Israeli abductees freed from the clutches of Hamas and return to their families.
The fears were enormous: What were they going through there? Are they healthy? How do they feel? What scars do they bear, on their body or soul? In the early evening, the images began to flow, fragmented, confusing. In some of them, Hamas members could be seen, their faces covered, handing over the stunned abductees to the Red Cross – urgently, forcefully. Other footage gave the signal for a sigh of relief that could seemingly be heard in every home in Israel – one of the abductees waving goodbye from inside the ambulance. She's fine, and she's on her way.
Then the abductees arrived and were reunited with their families. Tears of joy choked every throat as Ohad Munder, who celebrated his 9th birthday in Gaza, ran excitedly into his father's embracing arms. When 6-year-old Emilia Aloni was reunited with her grandmother at Schneider Hospital. When 4-year-old Raz Asher told her father Yoni, "I dreamed that we went home," and her excited father Yoni replied that here, the dream came true. After almost 50 days in the inferno of Gaza, this is what the first Shabbat of the abductees looked like here, at home
