More than 100 citizens in a public municipal council meeting: that doesn't happen often. In Ingenried this year for the second time. This time on the agenda: the accommodation of refugees.

Ingenried – "I am pleased that you always come in such large numbers when you are interested in a topic": This is how Ingenried's mayor Georg Saur introduced the most recent meeting, which took place for the second time in the multi-purpose hall due to the great interest. The topic in May: The Schongau Hospital.

The topic now: accommodation for refugees. At the beginning, Saur brought everyone up to speed. There are currently six asylum seekers living in the municipality. It is also clear that Ingenried cannot stay out of the provision of new accommodation. We're all in this together." It is not a question of "whether we take in refugees, but where, how and how many".

At the same time, he asked the guests, to whom he would grant the right to speak at a later date, for "consideration, objectivity and constructiveness". There should also be no discussion about the failed asylum policy of the federal government or proposals such as "we will send the buses to Berlin". Rather, it is a matter of finding a solution for Ingenried. Everyone really adhered to this – local councillors and citizens. The Q&A session that followed was disciplined and factual (see below).

Near the sports field it is not possible because of the water protection area

"We thought our heads were hot," Saur continued. As a possible solution, the municipal council had found an area on Krottenhiller Straße near the sports field with the asylum commissioners of the district office, Bernhard Pössinger and Helmut Hartl, who were also invited to the meeting, on which a thermal hall could have been built. Had.

This is because the area is located in a water protection area. "Building is prohibited there," says Saur. So what to do?

"We wanted to focus on municipal properties and found a solution," the mayor said. Most likely, an emergency shelter for refugees will be set up in the old "Gasthaus zur Sonne".

Not quite done yet

However, this is not yet a done deal, as no inspection with Pössinger and Hartl has yet taken place, but the signs are good. The lack of cooking and washing facilities would be compensated for with erected containers, and even with the outdated heating system, "we will come up with something," Pössinger was optimistic.

He also clarified: "The village inn will be an emergency shelter. In other words, it is only temporary." We are talking about half a year. In this short period of time, it is also not necessary to provide additional kindergarten or school places.

Other decentralised accommodation options

In the next few weeks, the municipality of Ingenried wants to find suitable areas for the construction of residential modules or other decentralised accommodation options. For a longer-term solution. "Life in our village will change," Saur concluded.

And he had something else on his mind: "I ask all of you, without reservations and openly, to deal with the new situation. I also ask you for your understanding and the integration of the new fellow human beings. This is the only way we can all continue to live together peacefully."

And he thinks it would be best if a small circle of Ingenried citizens could be found who would take care of integration. Like the former circle of asylum helpers.

Some of the questions from the members of the municipal council and the citizens of Ingenried, and the answers from Bernhard Pössinger and Helmut Hartl:

Who guarantees that the emergency shelter will only last for six months?

Answer: You can take our word for it. In addition, we are adhering to the lease agreement that we will conclude. And if it goes on for half a year, then that's the way it is.

Why is there only talk of 25 refugees in the case of a forced allocation? It's better to get away with it than if you have to provide accommodation for 32 people.

Answer: We'll start at 25, that's a rough estimate, because we can't look into the crystal ball either and don't know what's in store for us in the near future. The figure could also be quickly revised upwards.

If families also come to us, wouldn't it make more sense to start integrating right away? Especially with the children?

Answer: The emergency shelter is only temporary and short-term. During this time, we try to get people into long-term tenancies. Only then are topics such as kindergarten and school places relevant. And we know that no satisfactory solutions have yet been found here. But it's the turn of the responsible authorities.

If housing for refugees is now being created everywhere, are these rental properties not being taken off the market, even though they are urgently needed for our population?

Answer: The properties we rent are almost always those that cannot be rented out at the moment, that no one wants to live in. Often also because the owners do not want to spend money on necessary renovations. We then rebuild them and make them habitable again.

What about local supplies if they all want to cook for themselves?

Answer: The refugees receive the asylum social benefit. Where they shop, whether in the village shop or somewhere else, is up to them. But believe us: they have all made it this far, they also manage to cycle a few kilometres to the shops.

Who pays for the accommodation? Even in the long term?

Answer: All of this is paid for by the Free State. Currently indefinite, i.e. infinite.
