From the beginning of the fighting, fighters and dogs from the Merom Brigade's Oketz Unit joined the infantry, armored and engineering forces in the Gaza Strip. The fighters and dogs are attached to the combat forces, assist in locating and finding terrorists, locating explosives and weapons, locating missing persons and fallen soldiers.
During the fighting, the fighters located dozens of IEDs in booby-trapped locations and dozens of caches of weapons. In addition, the unit's female fighters take a significant part in locating findings and information regarding abductees and missing persons in the Gaza Strip.
As part of the unit's activity, Oketz fighters and their dogs located IEDs in a room at Rantisi Hospital along with a cache of weapons. In another activity, during a search, a unit dog found an explosive barrel attached to a weapon found in the area with the aim of hitting forces arriving in the area.
Four dogs, which took a significant part in the fighting together with the unit's fighters, were killed during clashes inside the Gaza Strip, while defending IDF forces with their bodies. The dogs will be brought to a burial ceremony in the unit, in the designated plot.
