Israeli security forces detained Osama Bani Fadel, the terrorist suspected of murdering Silas Shai Nigerker and his son Aviad Nir in a Jenin refugee camp last August. According to a joint Shin Bet-IDF statement, the assailant was found armed in an apartment in the refugee camp and taken for interrogation by the Shin Bet.Silas' cousin, Yitzhak Nigerker, said after the attack that the two went to a garage in the Palestinian village to repair a car.

"He drove shuttles among other things and went with his son to fix something," he said. "During the cleaning after the repair, they walked around until they were shot. A huge tragedy." The cousin later said that only a week earlier they had celebrated Silas' 60th birthday. "We laughed, we were entertaining ourselves about childhood experiences, suddenly we heard the gospel and we couldn't believe it," he said.

"It was an execution," a military source said after the attack, "shooting at very close range. It wasn't a random act." Security sources said it was impossible to rule out the possibility that the attack was planned, including waiting for information about Israelis, calling him to where they were, shooting at close range, and fleeing while throwing his weapon. After the incident, IDF forces set up roadblocks and launched a manhunt for the terrorist.

The IDF's investigation revealed a series of failures by the military, even though it was a particularly bloody scene. At first, the route was not reinforced during the Sabbath, and therefore the forces in the area did not hear the shooting and did not even see the terrorist flee. The investigation also revealed that the father and son had been present in the village for several hours to run errands.
