Finance Committee Chairman MK Moshe Gafni attacked Bank of Israel Governor Prof. Amir Yaron at the start of the Knesset Committee meeting: "On the issue of bank interest rates raised here, I said I would invite the Governor of the Bank of Israel here, because this is an issue that we have been discussing for a very long time and has not changed for the better—the reality is that a person receives very little for the money he has in the bank and has to pay a fortune on mortgages and credit.
"I understand that the government intends to appoint him for another term, his term is characterized by the fact that the weak are harmed, that interest rates are constantly rising, and that the burden on the public is terrible. He's not a good governor – he's a bad governor, the government makes a bad decision. The banks make a fortune, and there are no narrow eyes on them, but what is this money, where does this money from the banks come from? From the young couples, they earn a fortune at the expense of the young couples who take out mortgages, and I will do what is necessary in this regard."
