I don't know what it means to destroy Hamas, but it can't be destroyed so easily, according to Qatari Prime Minister Mohammed bin Abdulrahman al-Thani.
In an interview with the Frankfurter Allgemeine Zeitung, published this morning, al-Thani said: "No one knows what the end of the war will look like. This will be decided by Israel. I don't know what their goal is to destroy Hamas. Hamas cannot be completely destroyed so easily."
Asked whether Hamas would be part of the solution in the Gaza Strip, he replied: "Still very, very difficult to say. This confrontation is not new. What was new was the Hamas offensive, its scope and significance. The extent of the destruction Israel has wreaked in Gaza and the number of fatalities there is also new. These are new factors... Whether we accept it or not, Hamas is part of Palestinian society in both Gaza and the West Bank. Or does it mean the end of his presence in Gaza? The (Israeli) definition is very broad."
He said the main goal now was to end the violence. There is currently a positive dynamic and steps are being made in that direction. "There is no conflict that began on the battlefield and ended there. In the end, there are agreements and compromises. There were a lot of emotions and anger at first, on both sides. Now that the hostages are released and there is a pause in the fighting, it is time to find a solution. We won't give up so quickly."
