Kemi Bednock, British Secretary of State for International Trade, sided with Israel on Tuesday and said the country adheres to international law in the fighting in the Gaza Strip.
Bednock made the remarks in response to British Foreign Secretary David Cameron's statement that Israel must ensure that international law is upheld in the fighting in Gaza. "To the best of my knowledge, we have always said that Israel must abide by international law and that seems to be what they have done. We want to make sure that there is no case at all in which Israel is criticized for violating international law," she said.
"So far as I know, there have been no violations of international law. Israelis seem to be going to great lengths to ensure that they obey the law. We commend them for that," Bednock said during an interview with Britain's Daily Mail. Bednock became Britain's first minister to argue that Israel was not violating international law, a claim not often heard in European politics.
"Every loss in war is too high. What we would like to see is the end of this crisis... With the smallest possible number of casualties," Bednock said, stressing that the events of October 7 were "absolutely horrific."
