Mossad Director Dadi Barnea and CIA Director Bill Burns arrived in Qatar on Tuesday and will meet with other officials and senior mediators in order to promote an "extensive" hostage deal between Israel and Hamas.
According to an initial report in the Washington Post, the goal is to create a hostage deal that will also include abductees, men and soldiers, while also promoting the extension of the ceasefire. At the same time, according to the same report, CIA Director Burns is pressing for the return of the American hostages held captive by Hamas, eight or nine of them.
The meetings were intended to refine and upgrade the mechanism of the deal in order to effectively prevent what we have seen until now, when Hamas "played" Israel. A source familiar with the matter said: "These are only preliminary talks about the possibility of releasing additional abductees from Hamas captivity that began today in Qatar. It is too early to say how and whether the conditions will mature."
Another Israeli source said: "The number of days of respite is limited because the agreement deals only with abductees alive, so this is only a few more days of respite." As far as Burns is concerned, the outline for extending the ceasefire would include the release of ten more hostages each day in exchange for each day of respite.
