After the danger of storms comes the snow bell: Up to 30 centimetres of fresh snow have been announced - in some parts of Germany there have already been serious accidents.

Update November 27, 2023: Germany is facing a drastic onset of winter, reports wetter.com. According to this, some snow could fall in most federal states in the new week. Up to two metres of snow are expected in the high mountains and 20 to 60 centimetres in the low mountain ranges - but even low-lying regions and thus also large cities could now see the first snow of the winter season. The German Weather Service (DWD) warns of frozen wetness and fresh snow including slippery conditions in some parts of Germany on Monday.

In some regions, snow and ice have already caused slippery roads over the weekend, and there have been several accidents with injuries. In the Saxon town of Plauen, a 72-year-old driver was seriously injured on Sunday after he veered off the main road due to wintry road conditions and rolled over with his car. In Schotten in central Hesse, five young vehicle occupants between the ages of 16 and 24 were injured, some seriously, in an accident on a snow-covered road. The 24-year-old driver had lost control of his vehicle in the wintry road conditions, which crashed into a tree.

In an accident on the Autobahn 4 near Eisenach in Thuringia, a family with three children was slightly injured. In the direction of Dresden, the 44-year-old driver of the car skidded on Sunday afternoon and overturned.

Weather warning for Germany - these regions are affected

Update November 21, 2023: For the past few days there have been numerous weather warnings for Germany and the rest of the week the weather is expected to remain mostly uncomfortable. As the German Weather Service (DWD) reports, it will be colder in the coming days. According to meteorologist Jan Schenk of the weater channel, it is even expected to snow twice this week – even in the low mountain ranges. Other forecasts even predict the onset of winter and snow all the way to the lowlands. However, the snow should not remain on the ground. However, this means that it can get slippery on the roads.

It is supposed to be particularly uncomfortable next weekend. According to Schenk, "there will definitely be snow, sleet and maybe slush." The risk of storms also remains high, especially in northern Germany and on the coast. The DWD also forecasts changing weather with rain showers and snow in the mountains.

DWD weather warning: These regions in Germany are affected

First reported on November 20, 2023: Kassel – After the last few days have been marked by continuous rain and flooding, autumn will also show its rainy and stormy side on Monday, 20 November. Currently, there are again numerous weather warnings, distributed throughout Germany. Gusts of up to 85 km/h and precipitation of up to 40 litres per square metre are expected in some places.

German Weather Service warns: Continuous rain and squalls

The German Weather Service is currently issuing level 2 warnings (warning of severe weather) again. One strip in the north is particularly affected. It stretches from Bremen via Potsdam to the border with Poland. In addition, the warning applies to ridges and peaks in the Alps and the low mountain ranges.

The reason for the striking weather is a low-pressure complex over the North Sea and the north of the country, which brings both moist and mild air with it. Continuous rain is currently moving through the north of the country and is causing level 2 weather warnings.

Parts of Lower Saxony, Saxony-Anhalt and Brandenburg are affected by the rain showers. Until Monday evening, as well as Tuesday morning, up to 25 to 40 liters per square meter can occur regionally.

Weather warnings in Germany - gusts of up to 85 km/h

The wind is also causing problems. Although the situation is already easing in the evening, it can still cause strong gusts of between 70 and 85 km/h, especially in the summits of the Alps and low mountain ranges. Strong winds are also to be expected in the southwest of Baden-Württemberg. From an altitude of 1000 meters, gusts of between 65 and 85 km/h can occur here.

November has also brought snow in some places. Still, winter could be disappointing for fans of snow and ice.
