"How symbolic that precisely these days we have laid the cornerstone and are developing, establishing settlements and eagerly waiting for the absorption of residents in this region, this is a tremendous civilian victory. Together we will defeat our enemies, expand the borders of our land, and plow to the last furrow," Idan said.

On October 7, when the terrorists infiltrated Israeli territory, Ofir took his personal pistol and on the way equipped himself with a long armory to fight the terrorists who infiltrated the kibbutz. Ofir was killed in the exchange of fire with the terrorists while defending the residents of the community with his body. The personal weapon was later found where it fell. 52 kibbutz members were murdered in the massacre.

Liebstein is survived by his wife Vered and their four children. He has served as head of the council since he was elected in 2018. Before the disaster, he was in the midst of an election campaign for a second term, under the slogan that took on a chilling touch: "We continue together."
