The 2024 Copa America in the United States is getting closer and closer. The Argentine National Team will seek to retain the crown won against Brazil at the Maracanã stadium during the 2021 edition. Now, it remains to be defined how the group stage will be shaped. Here are all the keys to follow the draw: when and where it is, pots and schedule for the contest.
So far, fourteen of the sixteen teams that will participate in the Copa America have been confirmed, with two spots to be determined. It is worth remembering that the 2024 edition of the oldest national team competition in the world will also include six Concacaf teams.
Thus, in addition to the 10 Conmebol teams (Argentina, Brazil, Bolivia, Chile, Paraguay, Peru, Ecuador, Venezuela, Uruguay and Colombia), there are 4 Concacaf teams with a guaranteed presence, the United States, Jamaica, Mexico and Panama.
The two remaining teams to qualify will be decided by two playoffs between Canada against Trinidad and Tobago and Honduras against Costa Rica.
When and where is the Copa America 2024 draw?
The draw for the Copa América 2024 groups will take place on Thursday, December 7 from 21:30 p.m. (Argentine time), at the James L. Knight Center auditorium in Miami, Florida. In the last few hours it transpired that Lionel Scaloni will be present at the event, which is interpreted as a nod to his continuity at the helm of the Argentine National Team.
Copa America 2024: pots and possible opponents
Each of the four groups will consist of one ball from each bowl. Therefore, Argentina already knows that it will not cross paths with Brazil, the United States or Mexico in the first phase, although it could have a major rival like Uruguay at that stage of the tournament.
The top two finishers in each zone will advance to the quarterfinals, from where they will begin to be eliminated through single matches.
