A U.S. Navy plane has remained stuck in Hawaii's Kaneohe Bay after going off the runway of the military base 16 miles from Honolulu on Nov. 20. A new video released this week reveals that the aircraft's tires have gotten stuck on a major coral reef.
Authorities are still investigating why the plane failed to brake inside the landing zone, causing it to end up in the water with nine people on board. All passengers were rescued without injury.
A Navy team managed to extract all of the ship's fuel, approximately 7,500 liters, to reduce the ecological impact of the crash. The commander in charge of the plane's extraction mission, Mark Anderson, explained that the left engine is stuck in the coral, but that the tide helps the weight of the aircraft lighten at times when it floats in the water.
Kaneohe Bay is known for being an important marine conservation area, with coral reefs, an ancient native fish pond, and a breeding ground for hammerhead sharks. Environmental officials hope to be able to make a more detailed examination of the damage caused by the incident once the plane is removed.
