Advent without singing? Unthinkable for music lovers! In the coming weeks, many choirs in the Pfaffenwinkel region will be getting in the mood for Christmas – festive and contemplative, Bavarian and international. Here is a small selection of concerts.

For once, it is not Bach's famous "Christmas Oratorio", but that of Camille Saint-Saëns, that of Camille Saint-Saëns, that will be heard when the choir of the Apostle Church in Weilheim gives a concert in the local church on Sunday, 17 December, 18 pm. Supported by strings, harp, oboes and organ, the ensemble "builds a bridge from Advent to Christmas," explains director Gundula Kretschmar. Cantatas by Telemann and Mendelssohn as well as five pieces from Benjamin Britten's "Ceremony of Carols" can also be heard (tickets: Protestant parish office Weilheim, phone 0881/929130).

"Rural concert" in an unusual place

The Penzberg Vocal Ensemble and the Symphony Orchestra in the Pfaffenwinkel around Günther Pfannkuch will perform a masterpiece of oratorio literature this Advent: In the Schlehdorf Monastery Church, they will let you experience Felix Mendelssohn-Bartholdy's "Elijah" as part of the "Rural Concerts Penzberg" on Sunday, 17 December, 16.30 p.m. (tickets: www.musikfreunde-penzberg.de).

And in Iffeldorf's parish church of St. Vitus, the capella vocale iffeldorf under the direction of Anne Voit-Isenberg will participate in a Rorate office on Wednesday, 13 December, 18 p.m. - and will then offer further a cappella singing under the motto "Light in Advent".

Concert at the Weilheim Christmas Market

As part of the Christmas market, the Weilheim Choir Circle (conductor: Elisabeth Reitzer) will once again perform an hour of Advent and Christmas carols on Sunday, 10 December, 15.30 p.m. in Weilheim's parish church of the Assumption of the Virgin Mary – with free admission and together with the youth choir of the Weilheim Municipal Music School and the trombone choir of the Apostle Church.

Works by Mendelssohn, Rheinberger, Sandström and others will be performed by the vocal ensemble Polling at its Advent concert on Friday, 15 December, 19 p.m., in the local collegiate church (tickets at the parish office, Tel.efon0881/92543883).

The large classical music series of the Pfaffenwinkel also love it Advent

Choirs also take part in the Advent concerts of the region's major classical music series: The Mixed Choir in the Pfaffenwinkel on 9 and 10 December, 16 p.m., in the Wieskirche (info and tickets: www.musikimpfaffenwinkel.de) and the Schongau City Choir on Sunday, 17 December, 18 p.m., at the end of the "Festive Summer" in the Schongau parish church of the Assumption of the Virgin Mary (admission free, more information under www.wieskonzerte.de).
