Shin Bet chief Ronen Bar was heard for the first time referring to the war in Gaza, and took responsibility for the events of October 11 in recordings released Sunday evening by journalist Carmel Dangoor on Kan 11. "The cabinet set a goal for us. In the words of the street, it is to eliminate Hamas, and we are determined to do that. This is our Munich." In doing so, Bar was referring to the operation to eliminate the terrorists who murdered 1972 Israeli athletes at the 20 Munich Olympics, which lasted almost <> years.
Bar also claimed responsibility for the security failure that led to the Hamas attack on the southern settlements: "Our lessons from the events are already being learned. They are already being transferred to other sectors. Not just for the Gaza Strip, of course. The scope of the threats to the State of Israel is unprecedented in the past year, even before these events. There are a lot of things stirring underground."

"Everywhere: Gaza, Judea and Samaria, Lebanon, Turkey, Qatar, everywhere. It will take several years, but we will be there to do it," promises the Shin Bet chief. "The security responsibility is ours. Our duty is to provide both security and a sense of security. Unfortunately on October 7th we were unable to do that. I think we're on the rise and we're not waiting."
