The Iron Sword War has severely damaged food businesses, especially those in the south and north of the country – where, even a return to normal in the shadow of the war, is not yet in sight. Now, just before Hanukkah, when there is a lively movement of customers towards pastry shops that tend to boast a variety of tempting and pampering doughnuts, they have been forced to close their doors or make do with a small crowd due to the situation.

In order to provide a platform for these businesses and enable them to sell their wares, a special culinary event called "First Light" will be held at the opening of the holiday, December 7-8, at Sarona Market in Tel Aviv. It will host pastry chefs and wineries from the north and south whose livelihoods and daily routine were damaged by the war.

"As part of the event, we will pay tribute to the late chocolatier and pastry chef Dvir Karp, who was murdered on October 7 in his home in Re'im in front of his wife and three children," Sarona Market said. Karp was the owner of Chocolate Coffee in the envelope, a place that became an anchor for the community. Immediately after Black Sabbath, his partner and close friend, Uri Steiner, raised a headstart to rehabilitate the beloved place and support his family. As part of the tribute, the students of the "Cooking" school's pastry department will recreate Dvir's signature recipes and they will be sold at the "Chocolate Coffee" stand in the market, and all proceeds will be transferred as a donation to the restoration of the café and the preservation of Karp's heritage. Apart from the wonderful pralines, Dvir's three signature recipes at Chocolate Cafe were brownies, chocolate soufflés and date cookies.

"First Light" will also host "Honey Chocolate Workshops" - a chocolatier established in Kibbutz Gevaram wrapped around by chocolatier Ella Harpak, a graduate of Le Cordon Bleu and an avid chocolate lover. It will also host the boutique bakery "Mattarlo" located in Kibbutz Ein Zivan in the Golan Heights, and in recent years has become a mecca thanks to fine croissants, baked daily instead of the owner, Adi Peretz. "When the war began, the place was closed to visitors. It recently opened, but serves mainly soldiers stationed in the area," the event's producers explain.

Among the businesses hosted at the fair you will also find the "Tupelo" bakery from the heart of the Old City of Tarshiha, which is entirely gluten-free, "La Chocolita" - an intimate café and chocolate of the Mohana family located in a small and special factory in Peki'in in the Galilee, or the patisserie from Ashdod I Love Eat by pastry chef Shmuel Avitian, originating in Marseille, France.

The event also hosts wineries and distilleries that have been affected by the situation. These include wineries from the Galilee such as: Latem, Kishor, Julia, Dalton and the Galilee Mountains, and wineries from the southern region, including: Pinto, Ramat Negev, Uriel Winery located in Sderot, Netzer Winery, Tzuf Winery and Moa Winery.
