Disaster in Indonesia: At least 11 mountaineers have been killed and another 12 are missing in the eruption of the Marapi volcano in western Sumatra, state media reported on Monday.
According to local authorities on the island, 75 people were near the mountain when the eruption began, of whom 26 were not evacuated by search and rescue forces during the eruption. "There were 26 people near the base of the mountain during the eruption. We found 14 of them, 11 were dead and only three were alive," said Abdul Malik, commander of a local rescue unit.
Most of the search and rescue forces evacuated the mountain area yesterday after a significant eruption began. Hundreds of people living near the mountain were evacuated from their homes and volcanic ash covered homes and crops dozens of kilometers from the mountain.
Mount Murphy is part of the Pacific Ring of Fire, which includes 127 active volcanoes. Murphy is the second most active volcano in Indonesia and the most active volcano on the island of Sumatra. In 1979, 60 people were killed during the eruption of the volcano.
