Former House Speaker Kevin McCarthy is retiring: McCarthy has announced he will retire from Congress at the end of the month.
McCarthy, who was scheduled to leave office in January 2025, made history by becoming the first House speaker to be impeached last October. "I have decided to leave home at the end of this year to serve America in other ways," McCrai wrote in an article for The Wall Street Journal. "I know my work is just beginning."
Reminder: Last October, Republican lawmaker Matt Getz led a move to impeach McCarthy for allegedly failing to keep his promise to secure his election as speaker.
After the impeachment, McCarthy announced that he would not seek re-election for his House seat representing California's 20th congressional district. California Governor Gavin Newsom will now have to hold a special district election to select a replacement for McCarthy.
