A common myth holds that sneezing is comparable to an eighth orgasm, and several sneezes in a row can feel like, or cause, an orgasm. Does this have a scientific basis?

A sneeze is equated, in one way or another, to an eighth orgasm – at least that's what a stubborn myth has been passed down from generation to generation for years. But is that even true – and how, at all, can the two things be compared? We turned to Forefront to help us understand the logic of madness.

On the surface, there are superficial similarities and common denominators between sneezing and orgasm: both involve the accumulation of tension in the body, which is released suddenly, resulting in a feeling of relief; In addition, sneezing, like orgasms, can sometimes be interrupted or not materialized at the last minute; Sneezing also triggers the release of endorphins – the feel-good chemicals in the brain.

However, that's where the similarities between the two things end. The amount of endorphins released during sneezing is tiny compared to that emitted during orgasm. A sexual peak releases a flood of endorphins, along with oxytocin, dopamine and other neurotransmitters into our system, while sneezing is very far from it.

The idea that multiple sneezes can somehow add up to an orgasmic experience is also far-fetched. While sneezing may provide momentary relief, there is no evidence that our bodies respond to repeated sneezing in the same way as sexual stimulation and release. Some people report sneezing or nasal congestion during or after sex – but this is probably due to arousal that triggers responses elsewhere in the body, not because the sneezing itself mimics orgasm in some way. The nerves that control our nose may intersect with those involved in arousal, but the effect is in one direction, not the other.

In the end, all studies and sex experts agree: sneezing is not reminiscent of the ecstasy of orgasm. This myth has no scientific basis, and there is no reason to avoid – or try – to sneeze 8 times in a row, or even more, if the body requires it.
