Sahar Tarek, editor of a student newspaper at the prestigious university, posted a tweet on the social network X announcing that "the Israeli couscous salad with tomatoes and spinach, a popular dish for years, has undergone a name change and the word 'Israeli' has been removed from the name." The editor took pains to point out that the dish would remain exactly the same, but with a different name.

A day later, students began posting photos of the familiar dish with its former name on dining room menus around campus. Terek responded by noting that after pressure was exerted on the catering company, the original name was returned and couscous returned to being Israeli.

Yale's catering company responded with a statement saying, "The authenticity of the food and the names of the various recipes are a topic that has been brought to our attention by students in the past. There were times when we felt that our food did not 'authentically' represent the country and ethnicity mentioned by name. To that end, our team has made a decision to remove country and ethnic group names from our recipes."

"However, in the present case, an argument arose that required reconsideration. In this case, Israeli couscous (flakes) are an ingredient that is explicitly listed in the ingredient list of the dish. Since this is the main ingredient in the dish, it is fitting that it will remain the name of the dish, so we decided to correct the signs and return the Israeli name," the catering company said in a statement.

The case casts an almost absurd light on the sensitivity surrounding everything related to Israel and Judaism on campuses in the United States, but also the sensitivity of the various organizations in universities to issues of identity, ethnicity and affiliation, in such a way that prevents its friend from naming dishes after their country of origin, for fear of hurting the feelings of the students if the recipe is found not "authentic" enough.
