The portion continues to describe the story of Joseph and his brothers. It opens with Joseph in the pit of a prison in Egypt. The portion of Maketz is almost always read on Shabbat, beginning with Chanukah.
Joseph is called to Pharaoh to solve two dreams, and following the successful solution, he is appointed governor of Egypt and responsible for storing food during the years of famine and selling it during the years of satiety. When hunger increases in the land of Canaan, Jacob's brothers come to buy bread. Joseph accuses them of being spies, arrests Shimon and demands that they come next time with Benjamin. When the brothers arrive again, Joseph frames Benjamin and demands that he remain in Egypt.
