"The Mountain Doctor" has been airing on ZDF since 2008. Series star Monika Baumgartner has now spoken openly about the future of the show.

Ellmau – For no less than 15 years, "The Mountain Doctor" has been delighting viewers and has established itself as a real audience favorite since the very first episode in spring 2008, which always brings ZDF dream ratings. The 04th season will start on January 2024, 17, but one question in particular is likely to be burning under the fans' nails even before the broadcast starts: What does the future of the home series with Hans Sigl (54), Ronja Forcher (27) and Monika Baumgartner (72) look like?

When does "The Mountain Doctor" end? Monika Baumgartner makes assumptions

The closer we get to the start date of the 17th season of "Bergdoktor", the more details about the eight new episodes come to light. It is now known that three characters are returning to Ellmau: a pathologist from a 15-year-old episode, Mark Keller's (58) serial son Jens-Thorben (Luis Immanuel Rost, 19) and Dr. Martin Gruber's flirt Karin Bachmeier (Hilde Dalik, 45). ZDF has also revealed that Lisbeth Gruber (Monika Baumgartner), who has been in a coma since the last episode, will fortunately not die the series death, but will continue to struggle with health problems.

Monika Baumgartner, who plays the head of the Gruber family in "The Mountain Doctor", has been in front of the camera with Hans Sigl and Co. since the premiere episode – and has now reviewed her time on the ZDF cult series in an interview with hallo-muenchen.de and taken a telling look ahead.

Although she has no idea how many more seasons of "The Mountain Doctor" will be filmed, Monika Baumgartner still makes a prediction about the future of the show. "I think it stands and falls with the ratings," explains the Munich-born actress, "If they were no longer right, we would quickly be out of the window. Anything that doesn't work will be taken off the screen, no matter how long it's been on TV."

Hans Sigl's secret guest role in "The Mountain Doctor"

Since 2008, Hans Sigl has portrayed the title hero Martin Gruber in "The Mountain Doctor". The exciting life of the country doctor inspires millions of loyal fans with every episode and has made his actor one of the biggest stars of the German television landscape. But what very few people know is that the role as Lisbeth Gruber's son is not Hans Sigl's first appearance as a mountain doctor. Ten years before he slipped into the white doctor's coat, he had already been seen as a taxi driver in the popular series, which was still running on Sat.1 at the time and focused on Gerhard Lippert, a completely different mountain doctor. Who knows – maybe an extra from the ZDF remake will one day be Hans Sigl's successor?

"Second Family": Monika Baumgartner talks about her "Mountain Doctor" colleagues

It goes without saying that after 15 years in front of the camera, a certain bond develops between actor and character. "I've been doing the job as an actress for over 50 years. You can't prevent yourself from bringing in parts of yourself," explains Monika Baumgartner, "Lisbeth and Monika do have something to do with each other." Nevertheless, the Gruber mother is only a role for her, for which she is happy and grateful.

Even when there is a crisis – as in the 16th season between Martin and Hans – the Grubers always stick together in "The Mountain Doctor" and Monika Baumgartner has taken her colleagues to her heart today. "Of course, it's like a second family for me," she explains, "Because we're together for a few months of the year and still get along well, it's clear that it's become like a second family."

There have already been quite a few prominent guest appearances on "The Mountain Doctor" – and soon the next star could travel to Ellmau. In Carmen Nebel's "Christmas Hits", Ronja Forcher offered the presenter a role in the ZDF series. Sources used:hallo-muenchen.de
