Donald Trump's rhetoric is always reminiscent of Adolf Hitler. One possible reason for this was given by his ex-wife Ivana - not the only parallel.

Washington DC - A resurfaced interview by Ivana Trump is occupying US politics. The first wife of former President Donald Trump had claimed in an interview with Vanity Fair magazine in 1990 that Donald had a collection of speeches by Adolf Hitler in the dessert table next to the bed in the shared bedroom. He is said to have regularly read the book "My New Order", a collection of speeches by the dictator. Donald Trump himself has always denied his late wife's claims.

But Ivana's claims are returning to political discourse for a reason. Donald Trump has recently stepped up his derogatory rhetoric about immigrants, using phrases reminiscent of Adolf Hitler's speeches. At two campaign appearances, Trump claimed that immigrants were "poisoning the blood of our country," a phrase used in Hitler's "Mein Kampf" manifesto. This was reported, among others, by the news channel NBC.

Ivana Trump was a political supporter of her husband Donald

Ivana Trump, née Zelníčková, is a former Czechoslovak skier and model best known for her marriage to former U.S. President Donald Trump. They were married from 1977 to 1992. The marriage produced three children: 45-year-old eldest son Donald Trump Jr., 42-year-old eldest daughter Ivanka Trump, and 39-year-old Eric Trump. Ivana Trump died on July 14, 2022, at the age of 72.

Although an immigrant to the U.S. herself, Ivana Trump was a surprising ally of Donald throughout her life. During his four years in office, his ex-wife supported her ex-husband's tough immigration policy. Also to Vanity Fair, Ivana told the story of how an employee at the Trump Organization regularly greeted his then-boss, Donald Trump. Probably as a joke, the employee is said to have "clicked with his heels and shouted Heil Hitler".

Trump flirts with Hitler slogans and comparisons

Ivana's statements from the 1990s give new impetus to the current controversy over Donald Trump's political positions. Trump had recently said in an interview with Fox News that if he won the 2024 U.S. election, he would be a dictator "just for one day" and have his political opponents persecuted. These comments were then followed by analogies to speeches by Adolf Hitler. Trump reportedly admitted to ABC correspondent Jonathan Karl that he was in possession of a copy of Hitler's Mein Kampf. That's what Karl wrote in his book "Tired of Winning: Donald Trump and the End of the Grand Old Party."

Also there, Karl also reported on another situation in which the former U.S. president apparently had no problem with a Hitler comparison. Trump reportedly told a congressional friend that former German Chancellor Angela Merkel had told him how "astonished" she was at the large number of people who showed up for Trump's speeches. "She told me that there is only one other political leader who has ever had such a large crowd as I have," Trump is said to have proudly reported.

Donald Trump's words are always reminiscent of Hitler

In November 2023, another statement by Donald Trump recalled the language of fascist rulers such as Adolf Hitler or Benito Mussolini. "We promise you that we will eradicate the communists, Marxists, fascists and radical left-wing thugs who live like vermin within our country's borders, who lie, steal and cheat elections," Trump said during a campaign speech. Historians were appalled.

In the summer of 2020, in a speech in Michigan, Trump called entrepreneur and automaker Henry Ford a man "with good blood" and emphasized the importance of "good bloodlines." Ford was known for his fervent anti-Semtism and enthusiasm for Adolf Hitler.

Donald Trump will run again in 2024 - with good chances

Whether and what influence the controversies will have on Donald Trump's political future remains unclear. The 77-year-old native of New York is running for the Republican nomination for the 2024 presidential election. Polls on the primaries in the USA see Trump clearly ahead of his intra-party competitors such as Nikki Haley or Ron DeSantis.

Should he receive the nomination of the "Grand Old Party", Trump would in all likelihood run against Joe Biden again. The incumbent US president had won the 2020 election against Trump. According to current polls, the U.S. would have to prepare for an extremely close result in a new edition of the duel and correspondingly weeks of counts. (dil)
