Deep divide in the majority

After 18 months of twists and turns around the ultra-sensitive immigration bill, the National Assembly, after the Senate, voted on Tuesday evening with 349 votes in favor and 186 votes against, out of 573 voters, LR and the RN joining their votes to that of the majority. However, the latter came out with a deep divide since it lacked 59 votes, out of 251 deputies, between votes against and abstentions.

This opposition to the text has been expressed even by the government: according to a ministerial source, the Minister of Health, Aurélien Rousseau, delivered a letter of resignation to Prime Minister Élisabeth Borne on Tuesday evening, but the latter nevertheless assured this Wednesday morning that she had not received it.

Like Aurélien Rousseau, several ministers opposed to the bill, such as Clément Beaune (Transport) or Sylvie Retailleau (Higher Education), were received on Tuesday evening in Matignon, according to concordant government sources. Prime Minister Elisabeth Borne also said she had the "feeling of duty accomplished" at the microphone of France Inter and repeated not "taking into account the votes of the RN". According to her, the text would have been adopted even without the votes of the National Rally.
