The need is quiet, the boundaries of shame are high. Helping people in need is often difficult and must be approached with tact, say the activists of the Neighbourhood Aid (NBH) Forstern-Tading.
Forstern – Secrecy is paramount. In the meantime, they have built up a network where they can find out where support is needed. More than 50 people in the municipality of Forstern have a voucher for the food bank. "I was shocked by this figure," says Mayor Rainer Streu (AWG). The community has become socially active here.
For the second year in a row, the municipality is distributing 200 euros each to the local NBH four times a year for the food bank collection campaign, which was initiated in Forstern by the parish council a year ago and put on a broad basis. In addition to the parish council, the NBH and the municipality, the local fire brigade, the Maria Tading children's and youth choir, the St. Korbinian kindergarten and the faithful of the parish association also participate in it (we reported).
"Several more people would be eligible, but they don't go to the food bank," adds Mathias Weigl, who is the social contact person in the community, helps with specific concerns or arranges appropriate contacts. Since the municipality of Forstern runs its own day-care centres, it is easier to find out where you can help to relieve families with children - whether with food parcels, toys or school supplies. For one family, the NBH had covered the costs of after-school care during the holidays in order to provide school support and make everyday work easier for the parents.
Bettina Konstabel, who is responsible for social projects at the NBH Forstern-Tading, reports on an elderly person who is largely confined to the house: "We are currently organizing a TV chair." So far, a garden chair has served as a seat. Another person, for whom everyday life is arduous, receives freshly cooked, warm food every day via the Forstern cooking pot. Even for a seriously ill person with a family, "who was still very young and had small children", attempts were made to alleviate the plight. For example, lunch in the kindergarten was paid for for two months. The non-profit association also organizes shopping vouchers for the local food market once a year.
These are handed over to Weigl, who distributes them as needed. Christmas packages have also been put together to make fellow human beings who need help happy. Barrier-free excursions are also part of the NBH's offerings.
The NBH would like to thank the Karlsdorf shooting club Eichengrün "for a large donation of 500 euros". Some of the money will go to the food bank project, some to campaigns for needy people in the municipality. Like many other neighbourhood helpers, more helpers are urgently needed. "Everyone is welcome, every commitment is important," emphasizes Deputy Chairwoman Brigitte Hamel.
