The UN Security Council voted this evening to call for an increase in humanitarian aid to Gaza, with the US and Russia abstaining, paving the way for approval of the proposal. The vote was postponed several times this week in an effort to find a wording that would not lead to a U.S. veto, as had happened earlier.

The Israeli delegation said it was pleased with the results of the vote, after Israel's efforts vis-à-vis the Americans to maintain Israel's red lines. Among other things, in light of the fact that the approved version does not call for a ceasefire, the humanitarian nature of the aid was emphasized and the Israeli right to security checks of anyone entering the Gaza Strip was preserved.

A Russian proposal calling for an immediate halt was not approved following a U.S. veto.
