Emmanuel Macron probably woke up with a hangover feeling on Wednesday morning. The day before, after 18 months of legislative work and after a series of unprecedented psychodramas, the immigration law was adopted by Parliament. This text, of which Gérald Darmanin had made himself the standard-bearer, has been almost entirely rewritten by the right-wing LR and Marine Le Pen has boasted of an "ideological victory". The President of the Republic has therefore been weakened, especially since 59 deputies of the majority abstained or voted against and a host of ministers threatened to resign or slammed the door, like Aurélien Rousseau.
In our columns, the academic Benjamin Morel is categorical: this is a strategic defeat for the executive. "Emmanuel Macron has contributed to mortgaging the rest of his five-year term. If you consider that its main problem today is a relative majority, the majority is now very divided," he said
