Mourning was heavy Sunday morning in the community of Lapid, near Modi'in, upon learning of the death in battle of a member of the community, Staff Sgt. Itamar Shemen, in battle in the southern Gaza Strip. Shemen, 21, was a paramedic and fought together with the 77th Armored Battalion.

Liad Aggie, a paramedic at Magen David Adom, eulogized Itamar on Facebook: "This morning we received devastating news. Itamar Shemen, z"l, who was a paramedic course under me about a year ago at our station, fell yesterday in battle in the Gaza Strip. Itamar was a trainee at the Lod and Modi'in station about a year ago. A dedicated camper, striving for learning and loving man. Itamar took seriously the tasks assigned to him and would carry them out in the best possible way.

The Israeli Paramedic Association issued a death notice for his death: "The Paramedic Association bows its head upon learning of the fall in battle of Staff Sergeant Itamar Shemen, a paramedic in the 36th Division. Itamar was one of those unique individuals, the paramedics on the front lines of the fighting, who are for us an exemplary example of dedication whose sole purpose is saving lives and preserving Israel's security."
