Hofart in Weßling is moving: Jeron Barsekow and Nathanael Tadic are following in the footsteps of father and founder Jörn Barsekow.

Weßling – With colourful cushions and flags, the furniture on display, the area was an eye-catcher at the end of the village in Weßling. In January, the furnishing store "Hofart" leaves the premises at Hauptstraße 3 to 5. But "Hofart" will not be homeless. The domicile in Landsberg am Lech continues to exist, and the contract for a building in the immediate vicinity is imminent. The change of location in the district is also the first project as a family business: Jeron Barsekow (23) and Nathanael Tadic (22) have been supporting their father and Hofart founder Jörn Barsekow (50) for a few months now.

Munich-based photographer Jörn Barsekow is a photographer. The creative profession probably also explains the word "art" in the creation of the name. After all, it was his keen eye for art that led him to enter retail 25 years ago. At that time, he bought the remaining stock of teak furniture produced in Asia – and thus took over the business model of a couple of friends who gave up selling after their separation. From Lake Garda, where he lived at the time, he "embarked on the adventure of importing furniture," he says.

The search for suitable sales rooms was already adventurous. This was intended to "create space for creativity," says the 50-year-old, who lives in Croatia most of the time. The winner was a historic farm in Geltendorf – a building that was ready for demolition without electricity and without running water. He dug deep into his pockets, laid a wooden floor, whitewashed the walls and built shelves.

The first shipment, the contents of which had become mouldy on the sea voyage, was also adventurous. "That's the price you pay for natural products made from renewable materials," he says. "But I've learned." Since then, the containers with the handmade tables made of mostly recycled teak wood, the high-quality chairs and baskets, tablecloths or cushions have reached their destination in perfect condition. Production is also made to order, completed by local craftsmen if possible. This includes vestibules at the entrance, which are welded here.

15 years ago, "Hofart" moved into the store in Weßling. Since then, the colourful cushions on the exposed seating area, the weatherproof table sets or the stone sculptures in the courtyard have been an eye-catcher at the end of the village. The area was like a second home for siblings Jeron and Nathanael. Even as three-cheese highs, they lent a hand when deliveries arrived. The contents were full of surprises, among the unique pieces they fished out exotic tools or a self-made carpet knife. So it was only logical that Nathanael trained as a stonemason and sculptor, while Jeron decided to become an interior decorator. They contribute their expertise "with total joy and enthusiasm to the family project", says the father.

The innovative trio discovered the material "Terrastone" during the renovation of historic buildings. "This is a floor and wall finish with natural stone plaster that absorbs moisture and releases it again," the craftsmen explain. This creates a pleasant indoor climate – a perfect match for the teak furniture, they say. Samples are displayed in the showrooms, where they also advise their customers.

On 14 January, the Weßling era comes to an end. The building will be demolished and residential development will be built there (we reported). Where do we go from here? "We are about to sign a contract for a new space nearby," says Jörn Barsekow, who expects to open in April.
