The 98th Division, under the command of Brigadier General Dan Goldfus, will be reinforced with additional large forces, in accordance with the decision of IDF Chief of Staff Herzi Halevy and the approval of the War Cabinet. The IDF claims that the division will reach its peak in the operation of forces in the Khan Yunis area, at which point the division operates six brigade combat teams and a variety of special forces.
The objective of the decision to reinforce the situation was to increase the pressure on the city of Khan Yunis, to locate the underground systems in which the Hamas political and military leadership is hiding, to dismantle defensive and offensive combat systems, to kill terrorists on a larger scale, and to promote the destruction of terrorist infrastructure above ground.

According to senior IDF sources, the activity in the various locations in the Gaza Strip proved that the moment the maneuvering forces operate from several directions on one area cell, they lead to the surrender of hundreds of terrorists.
